Supply Chain Modelling Expert
Job Purpose
To achieve systemic impact at the scale of entire industries, countries, or regions, KCC is establishing a dedicated Scaling Team. Working closely with the Applied Research and Impact Delivery functions, the Scaling Team will evaluate the economic and ecological viability of potential solutions, develop business and implementation models for scaling, and mobilize the partners, financing, and operational structures required to implement solutions at scale.
What you will do
In particular you will
- Develop quantitative supply chain and business models for innovative, climate-friendly logistics and supply chain solutions, evaluating their economic viability, ecological impact, and potential for large-scale implementation
- Conduct techno-economic and financial analyses, including capital and operating cost modelling (CapEx/OpEx), investment requirements, net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR), break-even analyses, and sensitivity and scenario assessments, comparing proposed solutions with existing industry practices
- Analyse and model supply chain networks, including transport and logistics structures, network optimization, infrastructure and location choices, capacity requirements, material and product flows, and greenfield or brownfield development options
- Develop cost projections and business models along supply chains, assessing cost curves, economic incentives, value creation, and investment requirements for different actors and network components, and identifying conditions for commercially viable solutions
- Collect, structure, and analyse supply chain, market, and operational data, including data from regions with limited information availability, using transparent assumptions, uncertainty ranges, and scenario-based approaches to develop robust and credible models
- Develop and improve modelling methodologies and tools, including reusable supply chain model blueprints, standardized data and process interfaces, and digital modelling approaches such as digital twins, ensuring models can be adapted and used by regional teams and local partners
- Translate modelling results into decision-ready insights and recommendations, providing transparent, quantitative evidence on business viability, investment requirements, supply chain performance, and climate impact. Clearly communicate assumptions, uncertainties, and trade-offs to support the Scaling Team Leader's portfolio assessments and scaling strategies, as well as decisions by internal and external stakeholders
- Collaborate with the Scaling Team Leader and colleagues in Applied Research and Impact Delivery, contributing analytical expertise throughout the development of innovative solutions, from initial opportunity assessment to pilot validation and planning for implementation at scale
You‘re good at
- Working analytically and quantitatively, translating complex supply chain, technical, and economic questions into structured models and meaningful results
- Developing and applying financial and business models, understanding cost structures, investment economics, business viability, and the conditions for commercially sustainable solutions
- Analyzing and modelling logistics and supply chain systems, including networks, transport flows, capacities, infrastructure requirements, and operational trade-offs
- Using quantitative modelling and analytical tools, working confidently with complex datasets, financial spreadsheets, optimization models, and other relevant software tools
- Dealing pragmatically with incomplete and uncertain data, developing sound assumptions, testing different scenarios, and communicating the limitations and robustness of analytical results
- Thinking systemically and creatively, understanding how economic, technical, environmental, and operational factors interact and influence the scalability of solutions
- Translating complex analytical results into clear, actionable recommendations, making models and their conclusions accessible to non-technical audiences and practical decisionmakers
- Working independently and collaboratively in interdisciplinary and international teams, combining attention to detail with curiosity, initiative, and a solution-oriented mindset
You bring
- At least 3 years of relevant professional experience in strategy or operations consulting, industrial supply chain management, logistics, applied operations research, or related analytical roles
- A relevant academic background in supply chain management, logistics, industrial engineering, operations research, economics, business administration, or a related quantitative discipline, or equivalent practical experience
- Demonstrated hands-on experience in quantitative modelling, including supply chain network modelling, optimization, financial modelling, techno-economic analysis, or comparable analytical applications
- Sound financial modelling skills, including familiarity with cost modelling, investment analysis, financial performance indicators, and the evaluation of business models
- A solid understanding of logistics and supply chain operations, including transport systems, network structures, costs, capacities, and operational processes
- Practical experience with relevant analytical and modelling tools, such as advanced Excel-based modelling, optimization software, Python, or comparable applications
- Experience with techno-economic assessments of industrial processes, infrastructure, or logistics systems is a strong advantage
- The ability to present complex modelling results clearly, translating technical and economic findings into decision-relevant information for management, partners, and potential funders
- A strong interest in climate action and sustainable logistics, combined with the motivation to contribute to innovative and scalable solutions.
- Fluency in English; German and additional languages are an advantage
- Permission to work in Germany
You will work with
- The Scaling Team Leader and the Knowledge & Analytics Team
- KCC program leaders to provide logistics and supply chain modelling support
- Individual project leaders
- KCC industry partners, universities, NGOs and government agencies
What you can expect
- Work in an enthusiastic and highly motivated international team committed to making a difference
- The opportunity to have positive impact on climate
- A high degree of creative freedom for developing new areas of work
- High agility and speed of implementation
- A stimulating and diverse range of work, as well as the provision of considerable resources for effective projects
- Personal and professional growth driven by your own initiative and engagement
