Scaling Team Leader

Hamburg
Full-time
Permanent employee

Job Purpose

The Kuehne Climate Center (KCC) develops and implements solutions that transform logistics from a major source of emissions into an enabler of an effective climate transition. By decarbonizing logistics and supply chains and enabling the logistics required for industrial transformation, we aim to achieve durable, measurable, and meaningful climate impact.

To achieve systemic impact at the scale of entire industries, countries, or regions, KCC is establishing a dedicated Scaling Team. Working closely with the Applied Research and Impact Delivery functions, the Scaling Team will evaluate the economic and ecological viability of potential solutions, develop business and implementation models for scaling, and mobilize the partners, financing, and operational structures required to implement solutions at scale.

What you will do

As Scaling Team Leader at KCC, you will build and lead the function responsible for translating innovative logistics and supply chain solutions into viable, scalable models with measurable climate impact. You will guide the development of business cases and scaling strategies, from modelling, to early opportunity assessment through pilot validation to the operational implementation of solutions at scale.
  • Build and lead KCC Scaling Team, including team development, recruitment, methodologies, tools, and output quality assurance, establishing a strong capability for developing and implementing scalable climate solutions in logistics and supply chains
  • Maintain an organization-wide view of the scaling potential of KCC's project portfolio, working with Applied Research and Impact Delivery to assess the economic and ecological viability, commercial potential, and scalability of proposed and ongoing solutions. Identify projects lacking a credible pathway to scale and prepare evidence-based recommendations for interventions, course corrections, or changes in priorities in collaboration with the responsible program leaders and the Executive Team
  • Lead the development of robust business cases and scalable business and operating models for innovative logistics and supply chain solutions, ensuring sound assessment of economic viability, climate impact, investment requirements, market incentives, and relevant regulatory and institutional conditions
  • Develop scaling strategies and implementation roadmaps, translating research findings and pilot results into concrete plans for large-scale deployment, and collaborating with Impact Delivery to ensure that pilot projects generate the evidence and conditions required for successful scaling
  • Set standards and oversee the quality and practical relevance of modelling work, guiding the development of supply chain and business models, scenario analyses, and digital modelling tools. Ensure that analyses are technically robust, transparent about uncertainties, and suitable for informing real-world investment decisions, business development, and implementation at scale
  • Lead and coordinate the operational scaling of validated solutions, orchestrating collaboration among industry actors, entrepreneurs, financial institutions, governments, associations, and other partners to establish sustainable operating structures and achieve systemic impact at country or regional level
  • Build strategic partnerships and mobilize financing for scaling, developing a strong network across industry, development cooperation, public and private finance, philanthropy, and entrepreneurship; securing or facilitating pilot-phase funding and developing financing approaches for large-scale implementation
  • Lead the Scaling Team's portfolio development and governance, including opportunity screening, prioritization, budgets, performance monitoring, and the preparation of investment cases and strategic decisions for KCC’s leadership and relevant governance bodies, including the Kühne Foundation Board

You‘re good at

  • Evaluating innovative climate solutions from an economic, ecological, and logistics perspective, identifying the conditions under which solutions can deliver meaningful and lasting impact at scale
  • Thinking systemically and strategically, understanding the interactions between supply chains, business models, market conditions, regulatory frameworks, financing, society, and climate impact.
  • Developing and critically evaluating commercially viable business and scaling models, combining sound business judgment with the ability to guide and challenge complex financial and quantitative modelling work
  • Translating research and innovative concepts into actionable scaling strategies, including defining pilot requirements, developing implementation roadmaps, and identifying barriers and enabling conditions for scaling
  • Structuring financing approaches for innovative solutions, including mobilizing public and private capital, developing investment cases, and applying alternative financing instruments such as blended finance
  • Orchestrating complex, multi-stakeholder transformation initiatives, aligning partners with different interests and capabilities and driving implementation from concept to operational reality
  • Building and leading interdisciplinary teams and new organizational capabilities, setting priorities, managing portfolios, and combining strategic direction with hands-on execution
  • Communicating complex technical, economic, and strategic concepts clearly and convincingly, engaging decisionmakers, industry partners, financial institutions, and governance bodies

You bring

  • At least 10 years of relevant professional experience in strategy consulting, industry, impact or development organizations, climate ventures, or related fields, including at least 5 years in leadership roles
  • A demonstrated track record of developing and implementing innovative business models or transformation initiatives, ideally taking solutions from initial concept through validation to successful implementation or scaling
  • Strong knowledge of business modelling, economics, and finance, including experience assessing commercial viability, investment requirements, and financing structures for complex initiatives
  • A solid understanding of logistics and supply chains, including their role in decarbonization, industrial transformation, and sustainable economic development
  • Experience working with diverse sets of stakeholders, including businesses, financial institutions, public authorities, development organizations, and other implementation partners
  • Experience in mobilizing funding or developing financing solutions for innovative projects or transformation initiatives; knowledge of blended finance, development finance, or other alternative financing instruments is an advantage
  • An established professional network in areas such as climate finance, development cooperation, industrial decarbonization, logistics, and supply chains
  • A strong commitment to climate action and sustainability, combined with an entrepreneurial mindset and the drive to turn innovative solutions into tangible impact
  • Fluency in English; German and additional languages are an advantage
  • Willingness to travel internationally, particularly to regions where scaling initiatives are being developed or implemented
  • Permission to work in Germany

You will work with

  • The Executive Team of the KCC, including the CEO
  • KCC program leaders, in providing modelling and scaling expertise to KCC’s thematic and sectoral projects
  • The KCC Knowledge & Analytics and Scaling Teams
  • KCC industry partners, universities, NGOs and government agencies

What you can expect

  • Work in an enthusiastic and highly motivated international team committed to making a difference
  • The opportunity to have positive impact on climate
  • A high degree of creative freedom for developing new areas of work
  • High agility and speed of implementation
  • A stimulating and diverse range of work, as well as the provision of considerable resources for effective projects
  • Personal and professional growth driven by your own initiative and engagement and a high degree of visibility of your work
